Chair Betty Smith called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM and led the association in the pledge of allegiance. Minutes of the prior meeting were not available as Secretary Dorothy Robinson was attending a wake. Cochair John Edgar took the minutes in her absence. New cochair Rose Taylor was introduced to the association. Treasurer Frank Gillespie gave the treasurer's report. We previously had $1277.22 on hand. We returned $500 to the state for the grant. He deposited $130. So now our balance is $907.22. Betty happily reported that the state has closed our contract and we are in compliance. She detailed how the monies were spent over the past several years. Betty passed out an obituary of Henry T. Washington, longtime neighborhood resident. Jennifer Sherwood detailed the township's memorial tree program. The trees vary in price from $40 for a small (6 foot) one to $225 for a large one (12-15 foot). Jennifer also announced there will be a Rain Barrel Workshop on October 13 at the township building to help educate people about water runoff. Township residents who attend the workshop can get a $150 barrel for $35, if they RSVP soon enough. A motion was made to find out how much the association spent previously on a tree in memory of Waverly Woodley, to spend the same amount on a tree for Mr. Washington, and to consult with the family as to what kind of tree and what location would be most suitable. Cochair Rose Taylor reported for the grievance committee that concerns remain regarding the debris in and around the Jenkintown (Indian) Creek and its pending relining. The committee also contacted the township about a vacant garage and neglected lawn. The township followed up both concerns promptly. The grievance committee consists of chair Rose Taylor, Suzanne Brennan, Toni Burgess, Bert Graul, and Oscar Vance. DeVonne White reported for the social committee on our plans for greeting new neighbors with a basket of information about the association and local businesses and churches. She also expressed her desire to bring a health fair to our community, and appealed for help on her committee. Cochair John Edgar reported that Berkeley Amons won our book scholarship. Forms were passed out for the 2011 award. Betty Smith reported for the town watch committee in Wallace Robinson's absence. The Town Watch banquet will be October 10; please RSVP by October 1. Betty reported that Susan Dubrunfaut continues to work on our website. The commissioners were at a meeting to advance the selection of a new township manager. In their absence Betty also reported that there will not be a cell phone tower behind the fire house. The commissioners will review other ways to improve cell phone reception in our community. Kelsey Heller, winner from St. James, was introduced, along with Dory Jones of McKinley. Principal Charles Lentz of McKinley Elementary School greeted the association and outlined the school's extensive service program, which is led by the student council and the K-Kids program. He introduced teacher Nancy Hartzell, who has been leading the K-Kids program for 13 years, a subset of the Kiwanis program. She outlined their programs: contributing to a UNICEF program against tetanus, a trip to a nursing home, a fair, and many more that cannot all be listed here. Service award recipient Dory Jones outlined how she accumulated her many hours of service, as did award recipient Kelsey Heller. Abington Jr. High School Assistant Principal Ronald Brison spoke on the challenges in moving from elementary to junior high school: a huge building (so they provide and recommend early tours), a large population (1700) and the challenge it provides to movement, a tougher curriculum with a revamped honors program and plenty of homework, a formal behavior program, and an athletic program. He recommended reading the summer mailing before spending money on supplies, and getting the PIAA physical form completed and processed the summer before the fall season. He fielded several questions. Betty Smith adjourned the meeting at 8:45.
